Resident Evil 4 Impressions
01/15/05
It’s finally here. One of the most anticipated GameCube games ever is finally upon us.
Does it live up to the hype? In two words, FUCK YES.
You start the game as Leon who has the task of tracking down the Presidents daughter in a remote European village.
Leon quickly finds out that the villagers have all gone crazy or are possessed, as they are hell bent on killing him.
The first thing I noticed about the game was of course, the visuals. Gone are the FMV intros of the past, all the cutscenes are done in real-time with the in-game engine, and it looks absolutely phenomenal. The colour palette is one that lends the game a unique style, a very dusty, very gritty and all too real look.
And then there is the gameplay. Forget everything you knew about the past games in the series. RE4 blows them away as described in one such run, I had:
Confronted with over 10 villagers armed with knives, pitchforks and so on, I fired off a few shots from my handgun before ducking into a building.
Outside I could hear my enemies communicating with each other in what sounds to be Spanish. Not only is that a cool touch, but it’s all the more terrifying not being able to understand them.
Eventually the villagers reached the door and I could hear them outside, I blew a hole RIGHT THROUGH the wooden door and knocked 3 or 4 of them down with a shotgun, now let me pause a moment and tell you that it was one of the most satisfying feelings any game has ever given me.
I continued to blow more holes through the door as enemies approached only to realize the house I was in had two floors.
Running upstairs I found that the villagers had erected ladders and were coming in through the windows. I fought them off as best I could and then kicked the ladders back down, knocking the remaining bastards down.
Cool enough for you?
Yes, the enemies are that smart, yes they will find a way in. And this all takes place in the first few minutes of the game.
About 3.5 hours in, I’ve had countless experiences with these unrelenting terrors who utilize strength in numbers AND intelligence.
Zombies they are not.
I don’t want to spoil much more, but believe me when I say this game will exceed every expectation you had.
Even non Resident Evil fans will most likely fall in love. With an amazing and mysterious story, tons of action and great characters, this is one of the best games ever produced.
Look for a review when I complete the game.
