Rare is gone, now what?

Rareware one of the best overall game developers around. Recently their split from Nintendo has left me thinking what the hell?

Rare and Nintendo have gone hand in hand almost since their creation in the late eighties. They have worked with Nintendo on such games as the Donkey Kong series, most recently Perfect Dark, and Starfox Adventures.

But why move?? It’s all about the money folks. Rare wanted Nintendo to buy them, and Nintendo said no, so Nintendo sold all their shares back and, and the game hungry folks at Xbox bought them up for exclusive development. Which I think is stupid because I am huge fan of Rare, and the quality games they produce especially when they teamed up with Nintendo they were an unstoppable force.

So now what? With Rare gone to the dark side Nintendo has taken on the responsibility to create their trademarked games using their in house development team. So don’t fear you will be seeing more installments of Donkey, they just wont be from Rare. Their is some really good stuff happening from this departure and that is Nintendo has finally opened up their eyes to other developers. They have gained exclusive rights to Resident evil Games and a few other Capcom titles. But that’s not the jest of it, they actually have Namco developing the next installment of Starfox, that’s right Namco, and Sega is working FZero. This is one smart move tapping into the creative elements of a whole bunch of developers instead of just one. I hope they continue to do this, because this establishes relationships with third party developers, and in return may cause the Gamecube to get exclusive titles from them in the future.

So Nintendo may have lost one good developer, but they have gained so many in return. I for one am excited to see what the future holds for Nintendo
